Let’s fine lying MPs
AN MP will launch a fresh attempt this week to bring Boris Johnson to justice by banning lies from politics.
Plaid Cymru’s Westminster leader Liz Saville Roberts said: “Johnson is a world-beating liar yet our system is incapable of holding him to account for it.
“I will bring a Bill to punish politicians who deliberately lie to the public.” She added that Partygate, misleading the Queen into proroguing Parliament in 2019 and “that Brexit would lead to £350million extra a week for the NHS” were just some of his untruths. MPs, members of regional parliaments, Police and Crime Commissioners and elected mayors convicted of “false or misleading statements” could be banned from standing for election for up to 10 years and fined. It would not cover local councillors.
