Exercise can boost brain for over-70s
PEOPLE aged 70 to 80 who exercise regularly are less likely to suffer from mental decline, scientists say.
They found that keeping in shape could protect the brain from old age and illnesses like dementia.
Cognitive tests on 1,000 people who had been exercising for five years found the greater the increase in a participant’s fitness level, the lower their probability of developing mild cognitive impairment.
Over-65s are advised to do 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity a week, yet up to 70% of UK adults are overweight.
Author doctoral student Ekaterina Zotcheva, of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, advised: “Find an activity you enjoy.. that gets you out of breath and sweaty.”
