1977 is at No1 as best year for pop music

- BY DAVID JARVIS

MUSIC experts think 1977 was the best year in the history of rock and pop.

It included the release of the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, Rumours by Fleetwood Mac and the debut albums by the Clash and the Sex Pistols.

Record Collector magazine says 1977 is as good if not better than any other year, including even 1966.

That was the year of Revolver by the Beatles, Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys and Blonde on Blonde by Bob Dylan.

Record Collector editor Paul Lester said 1977 was great “not just because of the punk explosion”.

He added: “Everywhere else you listened, from soul to reggae, pop to dance, your ears were assailed by sounds that seemed to come from nowhere.”
