PM welcomes swim ban for trans women
PM Boris Johnson has backed a ban on trans women competing in elite swimming races.
But he insisted people should be “as understanding as possible”.
FINA, swimming’s world governing body, last week voted for the ban on trans athletes if they have gone through male puberty.
Sports Secretary Nadine Dorries added asking women to compete against someone born male is “inherently unfair”.
The International Olympic Committee said it is up to each sports body to set their own rules for transgender athletes.
LGBT rights group Athlete Ally earlier said FINA’s new eligibility criteria was “harmful” and “discriminatory”.
