It’s plausible but I doubt Met will act
THE fact the theory is plausible means the police should carry out a detailed assessment, looking for any opportunity to confirm different aspects of it.
If they find some independent corroboration then the case may be fully re-opened.
Personally I can’t see that happening and I very much expect the Met to tell us in a few months’ time that nothing can be confirmed and so the case will not be re-opened.
The theory is interesting, but not convincing. I believe it will join all the others in the box marked “Interesting theories … but nothing more”.
The theory is it was a case of mistaken identity: the intended target was a different BBC reporter involved in a controversial documentary about sexual misconduct in the fashion industry.
HITMEN
This does sometimes happen in murder cases and, as there are significant similarities between the two reporters, the theory is a little more plausible.
“Professional” hitmen, such as those the theory says were involved, rarely make such a mistake however and this really undermines it.
The theory will be attractive to some. Many have said from the very start that it “must” have been committed by someone who knew what they were doing as it was very clinical and just one bullet was used.
Whilst this may be true, a total amateur may have simply got lucky with how things unfolded or an obsessive stalker could have read up on how to do it efficiently.
The fact that the intended victim was just one of many making similar allegations against the fashion agency boss also raises the question of why just one was to be killed.
It wouldn’t help much when another 10 could continue the case.
