Call to build ‘20-min new home zones’
HOMES should not be built if they are more than 10 minutes’ walk from shops, GPs and primary schools, campaigners say.
Charity Sustrans said the Government should recommend councils refuse planning permission for housing not in line with efforts to level up communities and improve health.
It wants “20-minute neighbourhoods” focused on walking, wheeling – for example, wheelchairs – or cycling, with public transport also within a 20-minute walking roundtrip of newly built homes.
Rachel Toms, director of urbanism at Sustrans, said in order to meet net-zero targets it has to be made “ultra-convenient for people in new developments to walk, wheel, cycle and use public transport”.
