Steroids leading to breast operations
STEROID use could leave tens of thousands of men needing breast reduction operations, a surgeon has warned.
Dr John Skevofilax, who has carried out 600 such ops, says gym fanatics who resort to the performanceenhancing drugs are risking painful “man boobs”.
Gynaecomastia is a common condition that causes boys’ and men’s breasts to swell and become larger than normal. It is most common in teenage boys and older men.
In teens, the breasts usually flatten out over a couple of years – but in adulthood, they can require surgery. Dr Skevofilax, chief of surgery for Signature Clinics, said: “Tens of thousands of men are at risk of getting gynaecomastia because they are taking image and performanceenhancing drugs.
“While some men are comfortable having breast reductions, there will be many who don’t because they are embarrassed. And it’s these people who will suffer in silence.”
Former Love Island star Thomas Powell live streamed his own gynaecomastia operation with Dr Skevofilax in April to raise awareness.
