HE became known to millions as The Voice of the

Balls, providing commentary for the National Lottery for nearly 30 years.

But fans of Strictly Come

Dancing and its US sister show Dancing with the Stars, will also recognise the 67-year-old Alan’s commanding voice announcing the arrival of celebrity couples to the dance floor.

The son of a newsagent in Birmingham, he worked his way up from regional BBC radio to serve as Terry Wogan’s sidekick on Radio 2. He became the station’s chief announcer before leaving it after 28 years.

Alan, who lives in Harrow, North London, also does voiceovers for Children In Need and works as an after-dinner speaker and quizmaster.
