Reminder of polio’s pain
■ I can’t believe polio has been found in the UK after more than 40 years. It appears we’re going backwards with all the Victorian diseases coming back to haunt us.
I had polio in the 1950s. I wasn’t hospitalised but was visited by the doctor every day. I was seriously ill for six weeks and had to learn to walk again.
I have one leg shorter than the other, but not by much, thank goodness, but I do suffer with pain and cramp. It is a dreadful virus and can still affect you years later. People, please get your children vaccinated and don’t let this terrible disease take hold. Wendy Maddox Dalton-in-Furness, Cumbria
