WILLIAMS HAPPY IT’S OVER DOWN UNDER

George has no regrets at coming home to sign for Wolves

ENGLAND star George Williams insists he has “no regrets” on leaving the NRL even if current team Warrington cannot defend.

The stand-off has endured a difficult time since packing up early at Canberra Raiders last May.

Big-spending Wolves have won just three of their last 15 games and ex-Wigan ace Williams had been firing for Canberra (right) before heading home.

With today marking just 100 days until the start of the World Cup, it begs the question if he would have been better sticking it out Down Under last year. But Williams said: “I’ve no regrets at all. I loved my time out there.

“But I did what I thought was best for me and my family. My little daughter was on the way and I chose the right thing for us.

“I look back and have a smile on my face about what happened in Australia.

“Yes, it’s not going perfectly to plan this year but the goal remains the same: I still want to win things at Warrington.

“It’s not looking like that this season but we’ve still 10 games left to chase that down and make the top six.

“We’re not a million miles away even though we’ve been really poor. Our problem at the moment is we can’t defend. We’re conceding 30 or 40 points every game. We must look at ourselves.”

England kick-off the World Cup against Samoa in 100 days’ time at Newcastle’s St James’ Park where Warrington also face Catalans in Super League’s Magic Weekend on Sunday.

Williams said: “It does excite me to think it’s just 100 days away now until we’re back here with England. “Playing for England is the pinnacle but even more so on home soil in a World Cup. It’s the biggest of the biggest for an English player.

“I think I was the youngest on the tour when we went to the 2017 tournament.

“I was only 22. I played a couple of the group games against Lebanon and France but missed out on the run-in to the final.

“There’s some great memories but I remember us just falling short that day.

“The changing room in Brisbane afterwards was obviously gutted and heartbroken.

“We’ve a lot to do before then but if we reach the final again I’d love to be on the other side of that: winning, celebrating and being world champions.”

Williams did find some form to help England beat the Combined Nations All Stars last month but is battling an ankle injury to be fit for Magic.

He maintained: “It’s nothing major, just a niggly thing.

“I’m 50/50 for Catalans. Hopefully I play and can get a run of form going – and finish in that World Cup side.”
