Mess warrants a fresh election

- Edited by FIONA PARKER

■ DO the Conservatives really care about our nation or are they merely terrified they may lose their seats and therefore their careers?

As for having a mandate from the electorate to continue in office, PM Boris Johnson did achieve an 80-seat majority in 2019.

But what makes it far from being a democratic mandate is our country’s ridiculous first-past-thepost electoral system.

Almost a third of our electorate didn’t vote. Of those who did, only 43.6% voted for the Tories. That is in no way a proper majority.

With Johnson’s resignation our nation is crying out for a general election and a new government.

I just hope common sense will prevail and we change to proportional representation for our Westminster elections.

Ted Lyon, Sandown, Isle of Wight

■ It took too long, but finally Boris quit. Not because he thought it was the right thing to do, but because he was forced out by ministers leaving his government.

I just hope voters never forget that the people who turned on Boris are the same ones who allowed this charlatan to preside over repeated failures because it suited their own agenda or they were part of the old boys’ club.

They should never be allowed to take positions of authority in government again. We need a general election now.

John Fellows Blyth, Northumberland

■ Boris’s reign is over but who will take his place? I don’t see anyone who is fit for the job. It was obvious listening to the Liaison Committee on Wednesday that the party knew that while Boris was sending arms to Ukraine he was not replenishing stocks, leaving us in a vulnerable position.

He’s a narcissist and prone to grandiosity. This chaos has been allowed to go on knowing the peril he was putting our country in.

We need a party in power that will put the country before their own interests.

Derek Payne, Stoke-on-Trent

■ The propping up of the worst prime minister in our history by his colleagues has been going on since last year. They have embarrassingly stood by while his lies have stained British politics.

The fact they ignored his deceit and, in some cases promoted it, until two Cabinet ministers finally knocked the chocks away, confirms they are all unfit for office.

Good riddance to Johnson!

Sam Morgan, Barnsley

■ Forgive me for stating the obvious but the Tory Cabinet members don’t have a shred of integrity between them. How can any of them be serious in wanting the top job when for months they supported their leader?

How can the public, or even Tory voters, believe anything they say?

And we must not forget the Tories’ Brexit mess.

John Newman Ashington, Northumberland

■ Now Johnson is finally going, who will come next?

People must remember that Tory policies won’t change, only who’s in No10. We will still have soaring inflation, high fuel bills and many will still be struggling.

I live in hope that the next prime minister has even the slightest idea of what the people of this country are facing. But at the moment none of the contenders so far look any different to Boris.

Paul Booker, Clay Cross, Derbys

■ Well, Boris, it took you long enough to resign. How thickskinned and deluded you were to say you would fight on.

Your own party told you to go and ministers resigned in their droves before you quit. Goodbye, you won’t be missed!

Alan Gill, Widnes, Cheshire
