It’s a fine romance

-

My first holiday romance was an innocent fling aged 16 with Roberto who worked on the pedalos in the Lido di Jesolo. Which all sounds a bit like a Brotherhood of Man song.

We snogged for hours every evening on the beach near Venice, Italy, until it was time for me to go home with the rest of my school trip.

I can’t say my Italian improved much that week but my ability to breathe through my nose for long periods of time did!

Last week, Clare revealed her Spanish passion with farmer’s boy Jonny from Norfolk, and asked if any of you still had a souvenir from a holiday romance.

Old romantic Mary Barter in Coulsdon, South London, has great grandchildren as a souvenir from her 1966 fling. She writes: “I was 18 and on holiday in Hayling Island in Hampshire. I met a guy working on the dodgems at the funfair. He was also 18. In July this year we celebrated 53 years of marriage. We have two lovely daughters, eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren!”

Another reader with a holiday romance that lasted a lot longer than his suntan, Clive Rees writes: “I met my future wife on a Club 18-30 holiday in Crete in September 1979. We married in 1981 and celebrated our 41st wedding anniversary last February.”

The train had to take the strain when they got back from Crete, as the couple lived hundreds of miles from each other.

Clive says: “I’m from Cardiff and my wife is from Welling in Kent, so we had a long-distance commute every weekend.

“And as I worked most Saturdays, it was my wife who made the long journey on the Intercity 125!”

And finally, I’m sorry I missed this while I was off last week, but a big smoochy congratulations to Roy Batty and his wife Lesley (née Bennett) who celebrated 60 years of married life on July 29.

They sent this great photo of themselves walking on a beach promenade in 1962, and without knowing any other details, I like to think Roy is explaining the intricacies of the offside rule to Lesley, judging by the amused look on her face!
