‘WE HALL GOT EUROS BOOST’

- BY JAMES NURSEY

LAURA DAVIES has hailed England’s Lionesses and tipped Georgia Hall to continue the feel-good factor at home this week.

Liverpool fan Davies (above) is the UK’s most decorated women’s golfer, winning 87 tournaments and being inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.

She is aiming to beat a rib injury to tee up today at Muirfield in the AIG Women’s Open.

Davies, 58, is fired up for the event after being buoyed by England’s Euros success.

She believes that can help boost participation by girls and women in sports.

Davies said: “I have been loving the football. I saw every England game.

“You see the stadiums packed, especially for our games and lots of young kids in the crowd. It has been the most amazing tournament. Inspirational.

“Not all young boys or girls will be good at football but they might be good at golf or tennis or something.

The boys have loads of role models but now you have this whole England squad and they are all now visible and excelling.

“Hopefully it can give all kids confidence. Georgia has a good following among young players.”

Muirfield, near Edinburgh, is hosting the competition for the first time.

English star and 2018 champion at Lytham, Hall (left), was in a tie for second at

Carnoustie 12 months ago.

And Davies believes she has the game to prevail at the famous links, adding: “I like Georgia, she did so well at Lytham and this is a similar course as you have to plot your way around.”

Davies is upbeat about the future of women’s golf after Saudi investment that will fund a second year of the Aramco Team Series – with five events worth $1million each.

She explained: “It is part of the Ladies European Tour. It is helping a lot of the younger players.”
