Kenny: I stumbled across my prostate cancer by accident

EX-RUGBY union star Kenny Logan says he has been treated for prostate cancer after stumbling across it by accident.

The ex-Scotland international was inspired to go for a check-up after sports presenter wife Gabby talked about mid-life hormone health in podcast The Mid Point with Gabby Logan.

Kenny, 50, said it may have saved his life. He told BBC Breakfast: “I was actually listening to one of the episodes about menopause, about women and their hormones falling off a cliff.

“I thought ‘what about me...what’s happening to me’, and Gabby said I should get checked.

“I went and he said everything was fine with my hormones but, ‘your prostate is high so you should go and get checked’. I got checked and within three or four months I had biopsies.

“He said to me ‘40% of your mates have got this and they just don’t know they’ve got it’.

“And on February 7, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer.”

He had surgery and is now recovering. Kenny said: “I had to make some decisions – do you go for radiotherapy, take it out, or brachytherapy [internal radiotherapy]. I decided to take it out. Now three months since the operation I’m probably 95% back to normal. I’m extremely lucky. I’d literally fallen over it. I didn’t see it coming. No symptoms whatsoever – I had to go looking for it.”

Logan played for Glasgow, London Wasps and London Scottish.

The winger scored 13 tries for Scotland over 11 years before retiring after the 2003 World Cup. He also appeared on Strictly Come Dancing in 2007 when Gabby also competed.

He will discuss his prostate cancer in a special episode of The Mid Point, out today.

Laura Kerby of Prostate Cancer UK said: “By sharing his story, Kenny is reminding men of their risk, which is increased for those over 50, or black men over 45, or men who have a father or brother who has had prostate cancer.

“We encourage those in these three ‘at risk’ groups to have a conversation with their GP.”
