Starmer must seize moment

- Edited by FIONA PARKER

■ LABOUR leader Keir Starmer has reason to be optimistic about his chances of becoming a future prime minister now that Liz Truss is installed at No10.

There is little doubt in my mind that Truss will prove to be an abject failure as she’s simply not up to the job of tackling the scale of the crisis faced by the country. She follows in the wake of three hapless Tory PMs – Cameron, May and Johnson – who were, by any measure, unsuited for the highest office in the land.

Starmer should go into attack mode when Truss adopts any policy which would subvert our democracy. And hopefully at the next general election he’ll be on course for a decisive win.

■ Keir Starmer needs to be careful when he says he no longer wishes to renationalise our energy and water companies. Liz Truss is already reportedly looking at stealing Labour’s plan for an energy price freeze. If she then decides to try and steal Labour’s traditional renationalisation policy, then the next general election could just be a rerun of the 2019 Brexit general election disaster.

Keir Starmer sitting on the fence enjoying all the Tory infighting could have disastrous consequences if he isn’t careful.

■ How serious is Sir Keir Starmer about truly representing and protecting workers? Why are Labour MPs not standing shoulder to shoulder with workers on picket lines demonstrating solidarity? Actions speak louder than words, Sir Keir.

Having said this, it saddens me how any Labour voter could ever give their vote to the Tories, no matter how disillusioned they are.

Despite the decent lead that Labour has in opinion polls, they should be under no illusion how difficult it will be to win back all the votes they lost at the last general election. People need a reason to vote Labour and believe in what they represent.

■ As the weeks go by Keir Starmer is looking more like a Prime Minister in waiting. Now Truss is confirmed as Johnson’s successor he must not hold back. Truss isn’t up to the monumental task of steering this country through the worst cost-of-living crisis for decades. Keir must seize the moment and get the party on an election footing because if Britain went to the polls tomorrow, he would win by a landslide.

■ Keir Starmer’s centre-left approach is far more voter-friendly than the extremes voters have been offered over the last 12 years. We need a new approach to the catastrophic problems we all have to face after Tory incompetence. Keir and his team are just waiting to step up to the plate.

■ Since Keir Starmer has been leader of the Labour Party, membership has fallen and the party is losing a lot of money. He’s not giving full support to the unions or the workers fighting for better conditions. We can’t rely on the Tories with the mess they have got us into to win the next election. E Tollett, Coventry

■ Labour now has the benefit of a PM with a past to be exploited. Liz Truss once campaigned against the monarchy and supported the Lib Dems. It wouldn’t surprise me to see a few Tory MPs defecting to Labour with her at the helm.
