OLD FIRM HELL CAN’T SHAKE GVB’S FAITH

- BY DAVID McCARTHY

GIO VAN BRONCKHORST has total faith in his Rangers squad to recover from their Old Firm mauling to get off to a Champions League flier in Amsterdam tonight.

And he said he has no regrets about not diving into the transfer market on deadline day to strengthen an injury-ravaged squad.

The Dutchman, his players and the Ibrox board have been hammered in the wake of the 4-0 capitulation to Celtic (Jota nets for the Bhoys, below).

But Van Bronckhorst believes he and his players have the mental strength to bounce back against Ajax tonight.

He said: “The loss against Celtic is never fun. It was a really hard time. I did not expect to play so badly, at such a low level, but we have to look forward.

“We were all disappointed. It’s the worst feeling you can have after a game but then again, you have to get up and play the next game, which is very important for us, against Ajax. If there is a defeat, the first thing you do as a manager is to reflect on your own decisions.

“That’s where it starts and that’s what I want my players to do as well.

“Many things went wrong, so I could change everything from Saturday and play with a different team for this game – different tactics. But you have to keep hold of your way of playing.

“You keep trusting your players and give them confidence because, in the past, we have bounced back from heavy defeats and that’s what we have to do this time as well.”

Gers boss Van Bronckhorst (with midfielder John Lundstram, above) believed he didn’t have to go back into the transfer market after making seven signings early in the window.

And yesterday, when asked if he had any regrets about the lack of late signings, added: “I have no regrets at all. None. Otherwise, I’d have brought in other players.

“We had a lot of players going out, a lot of players coming in. I believe in this squad and we’ll keep going.”
