Shopper in hijab arrest was tortured, says family
AN Iranian woman who died in custody after being arrested for wearing her hijab incorrectly was tortured, her cousin says.
Mahsa Amini, 22, died in Tehran on September 16, sparking protests in which 35 have died.
Yesterday demos erupted outside the Iranian Embassy in Knightsbridge, central London.
Her cousin Erfan Mortezaei, the first relative to speak to Western media, yesterday said Mahsa was shopping with brother Ashkan when Iran’s morality police stopped them.
INSULTED
He said officers peppersprayed Ashkan then put Mahsa into the van.
Relating what a witness in the van told his family, he said: “During the journey... she was tortured and insulted.”
Mahsa fainted at the police station and Erfan said a leaked medical report revealed she was already dead by the time she was taken to hospital.
He said the report notes a concussion injury caused by a blow to the head.
His cousin had no involvement in politics despite reports to the contrary, he added.
