Kidney swap waste boost
A NEW method of preserving donated kidneys could reduce the number of organs being wasted, experts claim.
Currently they are kept in ice for a limited period before damage sets in.
Researchers found normothermic perfusion, where blood is pumped through the kidney, keeps it viable for 24 hours more and possibly even days longer.
Kidney Research UK said the innovation could “extend the critical window of opportunity from retrieval to transplant”.
