Mars map is a Red Planet ‘Street View’
A NEW 3D map shows users what it would be like to stand on Mars.
It shows the areas around the landing site of NASA’s Mars 2020 Perseverance rover, the Jezero Crater.
Sebastian Walter of Germany’s Freie Universitat in Berlin showed off his creation at the Europlanet Science Congress in Granada, Spain, last week.
Viewing the Google Street View-like map on a virtual reality headset would feel like walking on Mars, he explained.
He joked: “You can even listen to the sounds of the rover if you stand close by, but please don’t touch it – otherwise you would contaminate the probes.”
The map is available to view at maps.planet. fu-berlin.de/jezero.
