Howling out for a hero... shot cop dog gets gong

- BY LOTTIE KILRAINE

POLICE dog Logan nearly lost his life protecting his handler from an attempted murderer who shot him three times in the face during an arrest.

PC Ian Sweeney, 52, said: “I deployed Logan which was probably one of the hardest decisions I’ve had to make. I got hit in the face three times and Logan was shot in the mouth and head three times but he still detained him.”

Following the arrest in Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire, in 2017, the Humberside Police dog retired. But now he has been honoured with a lifetime achievement award. The eight-year-old German Shepherd received his gong at a ceremony at Knebworth Park, Herts, hosted by the Thin Blue Paw Foundation.

PC Sweeney said: “Logan is my soulmate and I’m so proud of him. He had a faultless career.”
