One act was particularly prickly backstage at The Masked Dancer.
Choirmaster Gareth Malone – who was revealed as Cactus on Saturday – went full method actor, studying famous wrestlers and the Hulk to perfect his swagger.
He then stayed in character, bowling around backstage at all times.
“I was immediately transported and became this ridiculous Mexican wrestler,” he says proudly.
“I never let the performance go from the moment I put my visor on in the car. I walked around as if I was Cactus the entire time to try to throw people off the scent so that if they did happen to see me walking around, it wouldn’t look like me.
“I think they thought I was a boxer or footballer at one point, so I kind of inhabited that walk and physicality as much as I could.” Gareth, 46 – who Peter Crouch thought might be Amir Khan – took notes on comic book heroes to ape their posturing. He adds: “I did look at some wrestlers to get ideas. Also, I was watching Marvel and looked at Hulk in Thor: Ragnarok and how he moved, and I incorporated a lot of his slams and physicality into it.” The Masked Dancer continues Saturday at 6.30pm.
