UMAR BLOW FOR GAMES

- BY CHRIS McKENNA

BOXING is set to be thrown out of the Olympics for good after amateur body president Umar Kremlev kept power.

The Russian (right) was left unchallenged at an extraordinary congress in Armenia after IBA (formerly AIBA) voted not to hold an election, with Dutch candidate Boris van der Vorst wanting to take on Kremlev for the IBA presidency. The IOC had warned IBA it was watching the congress closely. The Olympic body has removed boxing from the list of sports for LA 2028. There had been hope if Kremlev was removed that the IOC may entertain it being reinstated. Boxing will take place at Paris 2024 under the auspices of the IOC, like it was in Tokyo last year.
