Ron’s just one of many star turns

PORTUGAL

AT least Cristiano Ronaldo will be fresh for his final World Cup after warming the bench at Manchester United this season. And the Portuguese superstar (left) still has a role to play for the Euro 2016 winners who are dark horses to win their first-ever World Cup. The 4-0 win over the Czech Republic on Saturday showed Portugal are far from a one-man side with the goals coming from Diogo Dalot (two), Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Jota. The Manchester United fullback, who scored his first international goals, said: “The most important thing was the good game we played. The result speaks for itself. We played a great game and deserved to win.”

Ronaldo still made headlines for needing treatment when he was caught in the face by keeper Tomas Vaclik, missed a chance and gave away a penalty for handball.

Portugal showed when winning Euro 2016 with their star going off due to a knee injury in the final, Ronaldo is not essential. Coach Fernando Santos also has the attacking talents of Bernardo Silva, Joao Felix, Pedro Neto and Rafael Leao to

call on.
