TABLES BUT NO CHEERS

- BY LIZ BYRNES

JAMES NORWOOD will not be studying the league table until the end of the season.

Barnsley moved fifth in League One following a victory that extended their unbeaten league run to five games.

But, with only 10 games gone, Norwood isn’t thinking about anything beyond the next test at Fleetwood on Saturday.

He said: “I don’t think we’ll really look at the table until 46 games are done.

“I don’t think there’s any point looking at a table. You might do if you’re at the bottom end trying to figure out how many points you need to get safe but for a club like this we need to pick up as many points as possible.

“One point is going to feel like a loss for us. We’re going out to win every game. We should be at the top end of the table.”

Striker Norwood (celebrating, top) scored his third goal in four games with a delicious back-heel from Devante Cole’s low cross.

That followed Josh Benson’s superb opener hit with venom into the top corner from 30 yards, with Cole sealing victory before Jack Payne pulled one back late on for the Addicks.

Charlton are 16th, with their winless run now stretching to six games. The Addicks have kept only one clean sheet in the league all season, and that’s cause for concern for boss Ben Garner. “It’s my responsibility to fix that,” he said.

“It’s tough because it’s not as if teams are killing us and we’re hanging on, defending for our lives. It’s just a moment here and a moment there. We seem to be punished for every mistake.

“We have to stop it, we have to cut those mistakes out and cut those errors out. We have to be better in that defending third and get some clean sheets.

“At the other end of the pitch we need to take chances. That isn’t a case of ‘forwards, that’s your responsibility,’ or ‘defenders, that’s your responsibility.’ That’s the whole group and that rests on my shoulders.”

Charlton have won only two of their 10 League One fixtures.
