NAYLOR: OUR LEAM IS ONE OF THE LADS

- BY LIZ BYRNES

TOM NAYLOR has described playing under boss Leam Richardson is a “privilege” after Wigan moved to within two points of the top six.

Midfielder Naylor (celebrating, above) scored his first goal of the season as the Latics claimed their fourth away win of the season at Rotherham.

Paying tribute to 42-year-old Richardson, he said: “He is so professional. He knows the lads inside out, he’s worked with the lads before at previous clubs.

“It’s just a privilege to play under a manager like that – a young manager who is destined for the top. We know that if we work hard for the manager he is going to reward us.

“He is one of the lads as well so that’s what you need – you don’t always need to be on the button.

“He has a laugh with the lads and I think that’s what you want, it’s a nice environment.”

The Latics travel to Hull on Wednesday where they’ll play the first of 11 games in 39 days before the season breaks for the World Cup.

Naylor added: “We had a meeting at the start of the season – where we want to be after the international break, where we want to be halfway through the season – and we’ve had a great start and we need to keep going.”

Rotherham are braced for a decision from Exeter boss Matt Taylor as they seek to fill the managerial void left by Paul Warne’s departure.

Club captain and joint caretaker boss Paul Wood deputised alongside Lee Peltier as the Millers went down to goals by Will Keane and Naylor.

Next up are Millwall on Wednesday and Wood said: “We can reflect on what went wrong and why it happened.

“Maybe I can speak to more players and find out if everyone is okay with everything that has gone on.

“Reflect on their performance, maybe take responsibility for it and we’ll move on from there.”
