Plea to keep ‘triple lock’ pension vow

- BY BEN GLAZE

THREE-quarters of voters want the Tories to keep the pensions “triple lock”, a poll reveals today.

Jeremy Hunt faces mounting calls to maintain the mechanism that means payouts rise by the highest of 2.5%, inflation or average earnings.

Age UK charity director Caroline Abrahams said: “We fervently hope at the Autumn Statement the Chancellor does the right thing and acts to protect older people on low incomes.”

DRASTIC

The poll by Opinium for Age UK comes as Ms Abrahams warned of the impact of hitting pensions.

She added: “We are hearing some concerning stories about drastic measures they are taking to save money.

“For example, preparing coffee with hot water from the tap so they don’t have to boil a kettle, and eating a handful of biscuits rather than a proper meal.

“Our biggest worry is that growing numbers of older people will resort to strategies like these, putting their health at risk.”

The triple lock was suspended last year and due to be reinstated in April.

But Rishi Sunak has refused to confirm it will be.
