Metro workers on six-year strike

-

FRENCH trade unionists have threatened to shut down the Paris transport system indefinitely as it emerged that 50 of them have been on strike for almost SIX years.

Yesterday, a series of stoppages caused disruption across the French capital, where almost all Metro rail lines were closed.

Calling for increased pay and better conditions, trade union spokesman Arole Lamasse said: “If our demands aren’t met, the movement will last much longer. We are ready to start an indefinite strike.”

Another Unsa-RATP union source said that 50 members walked out in late 2016 and have never returned to work.

They explained: “They are angry about the way they have been treated and see no reason to return to work.”

The striking workers are no longer paid, but receive sick pay and benefits, they said.
