Stay in World Cup box room... for £175 a night
A VILLAGE of shipping containers converted into twin-bed box rooms will house up to 12,000 supporters during the World Cup in Qatar.
The “cabin village” has been built on a 1.1 square mile car park on the outskirts of Doha and has row upon row of £175-a-night accommodation.
Each of the multi-coloured containers comes with twin beds, a nightstand, small table, chair, air conditioning, a toilet and a shower. The price rises to £237.50 a night with meals.
The site has a metro station, bus stop, temporary restaurant and convenience store. Scores of bean-bags are laid out in front of giant TV screens where people can watch matches.
Omar al-Jaber, head of accommodation on the Supreme World Cup Committee, said around 60% of the cabins were already booked. Other rooms, at £70 a night, are available further out of the city. Berthold Trenkel, of Qatar Tourism, said: “Rumours that there are no rooms are exaggerated. There are plenty of rooms, but you have to have a ticket.”
