Finding baby’s 1946 grave gives mum ‘peace’

- BY STEPHEN WHITE

A MOTHER has finally discovered the resting place of her stillborn daughter after 76 years.

Marjorie Rigby, 102, was never told what happened to her baby after the stillbirth in 1946.

She said: “I was just taken back to my room and left.” The great-gran, from Dukinfield, Gtr Manchester, had two more daughters, but never forgot her first child, who she named Laura.

Marjorie’s daughter Angela Rigby, found Laura’s grave in Stockport with help from the charity Brief Lives Remembered. Laura had her own tiny coffin and was buried with five other babies and an adult in an unmarked plot.

Angela said: “We told mum and we went to see the plot. The look of peace on mum’s face was worth everything.” Marjorie said: “It’s really been a big relief to know where she is.”
