Sunak ‘integrity’ vow is laid bare

- Edited by FIONA PARKER

Rishi Sunak promised “integrity, professionalism and accountability” when he made his speech outside Downing Street. It didn’t last long, did it?

Sunak appointed the fanatical Suella Braverman as Home Secretary and twice-sacked Gavin Williamson as Minister of State.

Braverman resigned from Liz Truss’s government because she broke ministerial rules and now Williamson has quit over “unethical and immoral” conduct claims.

It was well known he was regarded as a bully in Westminster circles. So much for proper judgment, so much for integrity. Keith Bowman Chesterfield, Derbys

■ Is there no end to the Tory deceit and disgraceful behaviour? You could be forgiven for thinking they were some kind of mafia, they way they carry on.

The Tories seem to have different standards to the rest of us, putting their chums into powerful positions, covering up poor behaviour and trying to pretend they are a functioning government while chaos goes on around them. They don’t have consideration for anyone but themselves. Pity they all can’t go into the jungle – and stay there. Alan Robinson, Liverpool

■ Gavin Williamson has fallen on his sword and resigned from his position as Minister of State

– but this is the third time he has lost a Cabinet post under a cloud. One cannot help but wonder why Rishi Sunak gave him a chair in his inner circle in the first place. It certainly casts doubts over our new leader’s ability to make sound judgements.

At least Williamson is no longer in the frame, but the damage he has done to his party and to the Prime Minister remains raw. Jenny Pain, Chatham, Kent

■ Is there anyone more useless in politics than ‘Sir’ Gavin Williamson? He’s been sacked from the Government twice before.

Now he has been forced to resign from the Cabinet as Minister of State and is under investigation for sending a colleague threatening and abusive messages.

And to top it all this is a man who has been knighted.

You simply couldn’t make it up. Sam Lane, Leicester

■ So, Rishi Sunak’s defence for not sacking Gavin Williamson is that he was unaware of the specific allegations against him.

How can this be the case when everyone else in the Tory Party apparently was aware?

It seems like our new PM has been to the Johnson school of how to be economical with the truth.

Yet another Tory unfit to lead us. Mick Hall, Preston

■ Regarding Gavin Williamson’s resignation, if the Prime Minister didn’t know about the bullying allegations, then he should have made it his business to know.

All companies check the CVs of their job applicants. This dishonourable Tory bully should be stripped of his knighthood. Reg Barrett, Southminster, Essex

■ As we seem to give out knighthoods to any old failure, I would like to nominate Andy Capp for services to the alcohol and layabouts industry.
