Shut shops, pay respect
■ We are fast approaching Remembrance Sunday. It is high time that retail closures were applied to enhance the qualities of peace and decorum inherent in Remembrance Sunday.
This would give more opportunity for working people and their families to partake in the Remembrance events in their communities.
When Sunday trading hours were liberalised in 1994, Parliament to its credit had the presence of mind to ringfence Easter Sunday.
However, they forgot about Remembrance Sunday.
I challenge all politicians to rise above their divides and unite to enhance the status of Remembrance Sunday by providing for retail closure. John Barstow, USDAW Executive Council
