- BY MARK BRANAGAN

A D-Day hero died on Armistice Day, two months before his 100th birthday.

Sid Metcalfe was 21 when he was captured by the Nazis and forced to work down the mines then almost died in a cave-in.

He later became a joiner and was with the Normandy Veterans’ Association.

Sid, from York, had been due to attend a Remembrance Day service on Friday. But he was rushed to hospital at lunchtime after falling ill and died in the afternoon.

Sid was a driver mechanic with the 3rd Reconnaissance Corps and landed at Sword Beach.

Daughter Linda said: “He was a really proud man, and very generous and very caring.”
