TALES OF THE UNEXPECTED

-

“In the 1980s, my husband and I, along with his brother and wife, used to rent a cottage in Sheringham, Norfolk, for long weekends.

“On one such weekend, we decided to go for a drive around some of the villages. The last one we visited was Walsingham, a place steeped in history of religious pilgrimage and home to the ruins of two medieval monastic houses.

“However it was getting late that afternoon, so we just drove through the village and decided to come back the next day for a better visit.

“I just happened to look behind me out of the rear window as we turned a corner, and I noticed one of the lanes was filled with people in medieval dress standing around talking and shops were open and produce on display.

“I thought it would be really interesting to go back the next day and have a closer look at what I thought was a reenactment of village life in the daylight.

“However, when we returned, I was disappointed to see that the street of old buildings and medieval market traders was just a row of more modern houses and shops selling religious souvenirs.

“I thought I must have got the wrong street, but despite looking everywhere, I couldn’t find the old cobbled lane.

“The rest of the family were intrigued. It’s still a mystery to me, and to this day I think about what I saw.”
