How Jos bossed it... brought back Hales... gave Ben focus...and didn’t gamble by picking injured players

- FROM DEAN WILSON in Melbourne

HOW much of an impact can one man have in six months? Turns out, quite a lot.

In that short space of time Jos Buttler has made enough of a difference to become a T20 World Cup winning captain – and he has done it his way.

The task of following in the footsteps of a great leader such as Eoin Morgan was always going to be tricky. And it was far from plain sailing with three series defeats out of four in the summer immediately putting Buttler under pressure.

But his calm, yet focused approach has paid off with his team responding to his leadership, his tactics and his man-management.

He brought back Alex Hales, something Morgan would never have done. He gave Ben Stokes a clear and defined role that brought the best out of the all-rounder, even when some doubted it.

He was patient and gave players such as Liam Livingstone and Chris Jordan the chance to get ready by naming them in his squad when they weren’t fit for service.

But he was also smart enough not to take a gamble on Mark Wood and Dawid Malan when injuries caught up with them at the end of the tournament.

To cap it all he delivered as a player too. He scored important runs, fast runs and took some stunning catches behind the stumps as well.

Stokes said: “When Eoin stepped down and Jos took over, look how quickly he has managed to take control of the team and progress it from the legacy that Morgs left.

“Jos has now created his own legacy.

“He’s a guy who everyone follows in the field and it shouldn’t be taken for granted how hard it is to make tactical decisions under pressure in this format.

“It is so quick, but 95 percent of his decision-making as captain in this tournament he has got right.

“We are lucky to have him.”
