20% council tax rise alert

A COUNCIL tax hike of 20% is needed to fill a £3.4billion funds shortfall, No10 has been warned.

The Local Government Association said even if all spending is cut on services, councils would still not have enough money to plug the gap.

Two Tory-run councils said they are at risk of going broke.

The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities said it gave an extra £3.7bn to councils for services this year.
