Making a quick Getaway
THE BIG BUILD FOR CHILDREN IN NEED BBC1, 9pm
PREPARE those tear ducts as this promises to be another emotional humdinger as the DIY SOS team takes on a project for Children In Need.
Joined by BBC Radio 2 presenters including Zoe Ball, Jo Whiley, Sara Cox, DJ Spoony, Trevor Nelson, Rylan and Scott Mills, Nick Knowles and his team of tradespeople and volunteers are in Leeds to build a new centre for Getaway Girls.
It’s a charity that supports girls and young women across the city, many of whom are facing challenges. Getaway Girls helps them with raising confidence, self-esteem and resilience as well as providing support for issues like bullying or family difficulties.
The build will be spectacular as always – there are office spaces, a media suite for music and video production, adapted kitchen, dedicated creche for young mums and their babies, a stunning garden and solar panels.
Scott Mills is in a hard hat directing a crane (well, he thinks he is), Sara Cox drops in on a Getaway Girls music workshop, Rylan is abandoned while holding up a ceiling, and DJ Spoony advises on the Spoony Music Booth. There are also the hard-hitting stories from the girls and young women, who share their emotional struggles, explaining how the charity has had a huge impact on their wellbeing.
As always, the reveal at the end brings everyone to tears.
And the Getaway Girls’ choir also features in a special moment, with a surprise appearance from the singer-songwriter Emeli Sande.
