THE ENGLISH
BBC2, 9pm
More gun-toting action, dust and violence as this 1890s Western gathers pace.
English Lady Cornelia (Emily Blunt) has teamed up with Pawnee ex-cavalry scout Eli Whipp (Chaske Spencer) and soon finds mid-America is a hostile place.
“Can you shoot?” he asks her. “If I have to,” replies Lady Cornelia. “Oh, you’ll have to.”
No surprise that the unlikely duo find there are an extraordinary number of obstacles to overcome as they draw closer to their ultimate destination, the new town of Hoxem, Wyoming, in Cornelia’s quest to find and kill the man responsible for the death of her son.
It is here after an investigation by sheriff Robert Marshall (Stephen Rea) and widow Martha Myers (Valerie Pachner) into a series of macabre unsolved murders, that the full extent of Cornelia and Eli’s shared history will be understood.
Tonight as their journey continues, they are forced to make a choice when they find an orphaned baby and child. Meanwhile, in Powder River, an English farmer discovers the slaughter of his pregnant cattle.
