Neighbours back next year

- BY NICOLA METHVEN TV Editor

NEIGHBOURS has been rescued just four months after Channel 5 axed it and will return to TV next year.

Amazon has stepped in to revive the much-loved soap following an outcry at its demise in July after a run of 37 years.

The Australian show, which kick-started the careers of Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, Margot Robbie and Guy Pearce, will go into production within months.

It will bring back favourites including Stefan Dennis as Paul Robinson, Alan Fletcher as Karl Kennedy, Ryan Moloney as Toadfish Rebecchi and Jackie Woodburne as Susan Kennedy.

The new show will air on Amazon Freevee in the UK, meaning fans can watch for free.

Talks between producer and rights owner Fremantle and Amazon were prompted by the outpouring of grief at the soap’s culling.

Several big name stars returned for the show’s final Channel 5 episode in the summer including

Kylie, Jason and Guy. More of the cast for the new episodes are expected to be confirmed in the coming weeks.

And as well as the forthcoming episodes, the Amazon deal will also include streaming rights for thousands of classic ones from the past four decades.

Amazon Studios content boss Lauren Anderson said: “Neighbours has captivated its audience for nearly 40 years, building a dedicated and loyal following for the lives and stories of the characters.

“We look forward to immersing the audience in new Ramsay Street experiences when we relaunch the show next year.”

Fremantle chief executive Jennifer Mullin said she was “thrilled” to have found the show a new home on Freevee.

She added: “Neighbours is a unique series with a powerful connection with its fans from across the world.

“We cherish the show and all those who have been part of its incredible story over many decades.”
