Get Bake to basics

As the final of The Great British Bake Off neared its end on Tuesday, Matt Lucas announced: “Congratulations, you have completed the Bake Off.”

He meant the contestants – but it’s been a slog for the viewers too, at times. I mean, the finalists were all lovely and talented and all that, and I was delighted Syabira won.

However, it’s a shame Channel 4 tried to turn a quaint and gentle cake-making contest into some kind of flour-based Squid Game.

Hopefully the show will ditch the ludicrously complicated grand designs and (mainly) unnecessary time constraints next year.

As for this year, one loose end remains. Sandro forgot to tell Noel Fielding whether Paul Hollywood deserves to be called a plum or not.
