Missile ‘accident’ down to Russia

- Edited by FIONA PARKER

ANYONE whose support for Ukraine is beginning to wane after nine months should bear this in mind: if the despot Putin takes back Ukraine he will have even more control over Europe’s gas and oil supply.

What’s more, he will control a large section of the world’s food supply, which he could use as a blackmail tool to get poorer countries to side with Russia against the West.

The threat to world peace, especially now we see stray missiles hitting Poland, is greater than at any time since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.

It’s just as well some of these world leaders were not around when Hitler’s troops were stamping across Europe or some of us might not be here today.

J Foster, Hall Green, Birmingham

■ No matter what the cause of the missile landing inside Poland and killing two people, Russia is ultimately to blame. Without their criminal invasion and attempts to destroy Ukrainian infrastructure, it would not have happened. NATO should consider imposing a military no-fly zone in the west of Ukraine to make sure this cannot happen again. And Russia should be forced to pay reparations to rebuild Ukraine before they can have any future relationship with the West.

Brett Grainger Rugeley, Staffs

■ The killing of two people in Poland by a missile shows how easy it would be for the conflict to escalate. This time it seems it wasn’t a deliberate attack by Russia and the NATO response has been measured. But as the war rages on, we must not become blasé.

This is the first conflict on European soil since the Second World War and the most dangerous time for the world than at any time since the Cold War.

Putin is an unpredictable despot and the next missile strike may not be an accident.

Peter Wilson, Manchester

■ It’s getting to the stage now where Putin needs to be stopped after nine months of war. Western leaders held crisis talks to avert an escalation of conflict but this tyrant must not be allowed to start a Third World War.

After the liberation of Kherson he will want to retaliate for this loss. Thank goodness NATO has responded to this incident calmly and let’s pray for peace soon. Dave Mellor, Warrington, Cheshire

■ Two people have been killed by missiles in Poland due to Russia’s aggression in Ukraine.

Before Putin spreads war in Europe, the Russian people should throw him out of power.

His nine-month killing spree has gone too far now and is a threat to world peace. NATO must stand firm against this tyrant.

Samuel Farooq, South London

■ What are the Russians up to? Could the reason for their withdrawal from Kherson be they intend to bomb that city to the ground or launch a limited nuclear strike there? Or has Putin been made to step down by Russia’s elite and the generals who can see the war isn’t going in their favour? Melvyn Kaye, Portsmouth

■ In my view the only way to beat Russia, get them out of Ukraine and punish them at the same time, is to bankrupt the country, even if it takes another year.

Surely the West can manage to do that?

Richard Farrar, South West London
