A blaze on a wooden escalator at London King’s Cross Tube station at the height of the rush hour became a fireball, killing 31 and injuring over 100. It remains the Undergroun­d’s worst fire.

53 YEARS AGO (1969)

Apollo 12 became the second crewed mission to land on the Moon. Pete Conrad and Alan L Bean spent 31 hours carrying out research on the lunar surface.

28 YEARS AGO (1994)

THE first National Lottery draw produced seven £800,000 winners. In its first year Lotto raised £267m for the arts, sport and heritage and £154m for charity.
