Royal Marines landed at Gaba Tepe in the Ottoman Empire to protect naval demolition parties in 1915.

Volunteer stretcher bearer L Cpl Walter Parker won the Victoria Cross for sprinting 400 yards under fire to reach the wounded on the Gallipoli peninsula. He was shot twice but treated dozens for three days – then got shot again getting them to safety.
