Ye Olde Community Corner Shoppe

-

It’s true that you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone.

“We were so spoiled with independent shops in Glasgow,” recalls Elizabeth Park, who now lives in Coldstream in the Scottish Borders. “And they were all taken for granted and now sadly lost.”

Elizabeth adds:

“I remember the independents like Grafton’s in Glasgow.

“And the soft furnishings at Terleys – my mum always seemed to be needing a new piece of net curtain.

“And tea and cake then in Delifrance. Also now gone!

“How I wish we could get away from the chains and have some originality back.” A new cheaper man-made material, crimplene, was also making fashion much more accessible for all in the 1950s and 60s. Elizabeth says: “I remember the pink and yellow crimplene dresses I bought from C&A. “I thought I was the bee’s knees!

“And my fantastic portable Dansette record player in its pristine blue and white case. Oh how I wish that I had kept it.”
