We revealed the Queen wept after a fire at Windsor Castle destroyed some of its most historic parts. The £40million restoratio­n took five years, the Queen paying 70% of the costs.

69 YEARS AGO (1953)

The skull of the “Piltdown Man” was exposed as a forgery. The “missing link” between ape and humans was a mix of human, chimp and orangutan bones.

5 YEARS AGO (2017)

Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe, 93, was forced to resign after 37 years in power. His later years were marred by violence and corruption. He died in 2019.
