BY Greggs to open shop in home of traditional Cornish pasties

A PASTY war has broken out after Greggs announced it will open an outlet in Cornwall’s only city.

The bakery chain has so far failed to establish a viable foothold in the home of the pasty.

It tried to open its first store in Cornwall in 2019, in Saltash, but it closed after nine months due to poor trade.

It has since opened two outlets, one on an industrial estate on the outskirts of

Launceston and another at a service station on the A30.

The new bakery in Truro, the county town, will be launched on December 6 and proud locals have reacted with dismay. One described Greggs as “the Devil’s spawn”.

Another resident said: “This is the first major battle in a full-on war. It is an invasion of our capital.’’

Greggs said: “We can confirm we are due to open a new shop in Truro.”
