It’s a Nit special for Joe

- BY NEIL McLEMAN

JOE SALISBURY hailed the “extra special” feeling after becoming the first Brit to win the doubles title at the Nitto ATP Finals.

Londoner Salisbury (above) and American Rajeev Ram beat Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic of Croatia 7-6 6-4 in Turin, making amends for losing in the final last year and going out in the semis in 2020.

The US Open champions also earned $930,300 in prize-money in an event dominated by

Brits this year, with Neal Skupski and Lloyd Glasspool also reaching the semi-finals with their partners. Salisbury said: “This was definitely a huge one that we really wanted to win. It makes it extra special being the first Brit. It’s special for us after going so close in the past. To get over the line this time is amazing.”

Novak Djokovic (above) equalled Roger Federer’s record of six Nitto ATP Finals titles by beating Norway’s Casper Ruud 7-5 6-3 in the singles.

The Wimbledon champion, who last won this season-ending event in London in 2015, said: “Seven years is a long time, but the fact that I waited seven years makes this victory even sweeter and even bigger.”
