On this day 48 YEARS AGO (1974)

The IRA bombed two Birmingham pubs in the “worst bloodshed of the terror campaign in England”. Twenty-one people died. Six men were jailed and freed in 1991 when their conviction­s were quashed.

25 YEARS AGO (1997)

INXS singer Michael Hutchence was found dead in a hotel room in Sydney, Australia. His girlfriend Paula Yates insisted it was an accident, not suicide as recorded.

19 YEARS AGO (2003)

England won the Rugby World Cup after beating Australia 20-17 in Sydney thanks to Jonny Wilkinson’s legendary drop goal just 26 seconds from the end.
