Bent solicitor struck off after £470,000 in overcharges
A LAW firm partner has been struck off after overcharging dead clients’ families by more than £470,000.
George Nosworthy, 80, overbilled three estates between 1995 and 2020 and a trust for a disabled girl.
He admitted all the charges of misconduct, acting dishonestly and undermining public confidence.
He said he was “ashamed” of his actions after being “overwhelmed” by his 80-hour-a-week workload.
Mr Nosworthy was also ordered to repay costs of £36,157 to the
Solicitors Regulation Authority. The hearing was told he has sold his home to try to repay the money.
He began working for North London firm Cree, Godfrey and Wood in 1970, becoming a partner in 2007. He also had financial compliance and reporting positions. Mr Nosworthy overbilled £474,108 extra across the four clients, which he used to prop up the firm.
The overcharging was noticed after a 2019 accounts report and two years later his firm was closed.
