Supporters’ delight as the Glazers put United up for sale

- BY GIDEON BROOKS

MANCHESTER UNITED owners the Glazers have put ‘for sale’ signs up at Old Trafford after 17 controversial years in charge.

In news which will alert suitors including British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe and delight United fans, the Tampa-based owners are looking for outside investment. That could mean either

offering a partial stake to bring in funds to redevelop Old Trafford, or a full scale sale of the club, which the Glazers value at £9billion – although a more achievable target would likely be in excess of £5bn.

A statement issued by the Glazers to the New York Stock Exchange has confirmed the next steps the club is taking.

United’s die-hard fans have repeatedly called for their despised owners to sell-up and the statement read: “Manchester United, one of the most successful and historic sports clubs in the world, is exploring strategic alternatives for the club and the board will consider new investment into the club, a sale, or other transactions.”

Executive co-chairmen and directors, Avram and Joel Glazer, said: “The strength of Manchester United rests on the loyalty of our global 1.1 billion fans. We will evaluate all options to best serve our fans.”

Ineos chief Ratcliffe (top), who is a United fan, said in August he would be keen to buy the club, but suggested it could be overvalued.
