ONANA LOOKS FOR GOLDEN TOUCH

- BY CHRIS McKENNA from Doha

BELGIUM begin their campaign against Canada today with the golden generation determined to improve on their bronze finish in 2018.

And Everton midfielder Amadou Onana is confident about Roberto Martinez’s side doing just that. “Why not? That is the ambition we have,” said Onana (left) when asked if Belgium can lift the trophy in Qatar.

“We have a very good mix. We have very experienced players – I’m talking about Kevin De Bruyne, Eden Hazard, Thibaut Courtois, Romelu Lukaku and others.”

Belgium’s so-called golden generation seem to have been hampered by the title – much as England’s was in the past.

They believe finishing third four years ago when they beat England in the play-off proves they have fulfilled their promise.

But after losing to Argentina in the quarterfinals of the 2014 World Cup, and to Italy at the same stage in last summer’s Euros, it feels as though this team of great players has yet to really deliver.

At 21, Onana comes into the squad without being burdened by the past.

“I don’t feel any pressure,” he said. “Of course we have to take it in a very serious way but I’m quite confident.”
